So establish good habits: Turn in (and wake up) at the same time every day—even on weekends—and do your best to relax before going to bed, whether it’s watching a favorite funny TV show or reading.

You may discover that your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels have changed in this decade, even if you aren’t doing anything differently, says Dr. Hayes. In fact, 22 percent of 40-something women have high blood pressure and 50 percent have high cholesterol (a jump from 38 percent of women in their 30s), according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Also, be sure to get your thyroid checked around 45; hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland), which becomes more common as women get older, can negatively affect your cholesterol levels as well as your heart.

You start to lose muscle mass more rapidly in your 40s, which causes your metabolism to slow down since muscle burns more calories than fat. But it’s crucial to do so—not only to help ease stress but also to guard against depression, which commonly crops up in this decade and can raise your risk of heart disease. “Find at least 10 minutes of ‘me’ time every day to do something—even if it’s just chatting on the phone with a friend—that helps you destress and regroup,” says Dr. Mieres.

In Your 50s

Around menopause, you tend to gain extra weight around your belly, which can lead to insulin resistance, inflammation and heart strain. Cardiovascular fitness also starts to decline, particularly if you’re not that physically active to begin with. “Unfortunately, at this point, women have to burn more calories to stay at the same weight,” Dr. Stevens says. Start taking the stairs instead of the elevator whenever you can, walk faster around the mall, or jog to the mailbox to send letters instead of sticking your hand out the car window as you drive by. Small changes really do add up.

Have an ECG

Silent heart abnormalities become more common in your 50s, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check your heart’s electrical activity can pick them up, says Dr. Goldberg. Also ask your doctor if you should have a stress test; this is especially important if you’re just starting to exercise.

Besides being good for your cholesterol and blood sugar, pumping up your fiber intake (think whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice and flaxseeds, as well as beans, fruits and veggies) can help prevent constipation, which becomes more of a problem as you get older and your digestive system starts to slow down.

If you have hypertension or high cholesterol, the way you’ve been managing it before may not be enough. “As you get older, you may need more aggressive therapy,” Dr. Bonow says. “High blood pressure that was controlled with one medication may now require three to control it.” Talk to your doctor about whether you need to add to or adjust your medications to control your risk factors.

Be Alert to Symptoms

Now is when the first noticeable symptoms of heart disease may appear, so it’s important to know what’s normal for your body and be on the lookout for worrisome signs like chest discomfort, shortness of breath or changes in exercise tolerance—meaning you suddenly feel winded going up a flight of stairs or feel unusually tired for no apparent reason, says Dr. Mieres. Glaucoma - The Thief of Sight

FOR a moment, keep your eyes focused on the last word in this sentence. Without moving your eyes, could you see some of the area above, below, and on either side of this magazine? Most likely you could, thanks to what is known as peripheral vision. This ability makes you aware of that suspicious-looking person who is approaching you from the side. It helps you to sidestep objects on the ground and avoid bumping into walls as you walk. And if you drive a car, peripheral vision can alert you that a pedestrian has stepped off the curb.

But even as you read this page, your peripheral vision could slowly be disappearing—without your even realizing it. Worldwide, an estimated 66 million people are affected by a group of eye diseases collectively known as glaucoma. Of that number, over five million have become totally blind, making glaucoma the third-largest cause of permanent blindness. “Yet even in developed countries with public educational programmes that target glaucoma, half of the individuals with glaucoma remain undiagnosed,” states the medical journal The Lancet.

Who is at risk of developing glaucoma? How is it detected, and how is it treated?

What Is Glaucoma?

First we need to understand a little about our eyes. A brochure produced by the Glaucoma Foundation of Australia explains: “The eye’s rigidity is obtained through pressure—the soft tissues of the eye are ‘pumped up,’ just like a car tyre or a balloon.” Inside the eye, a pump called the ciliary body moves a fluid known as aqueous humor from the blood vessels into the eye. “The aqueous circulates deep inside the eye, nourishing the living structures of the eye and returns to the blood stream through a strainerlike structure called the trabecular meshwork.”

If this meshwork becomes blocked or constricted for any reason, the pressure inside the eye will increase and eventually begin to damage the delicate nerve fibers at the back of the eye. This condition is called open-angle glaucoma and accounts for about 90 percent of all cases.

The pressure inside your eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP), can vary from hour to hour and is affected by a variety of factors including your heartbeat, the amount of fluids you drink, and your body position. These natural variations cause no damage to your eye. High pressure in the eye is not by itself proof of glaucoma, since “normal” eye pressure varies from person to person. Still, high IOP is one of the indicators of glaucoma.

A rare form of this disease is called acute, or angle-closure, glaucoma. Unlike open-angle glaucoma, this type involves a sudden increase of pressure in the eye. It causes severe pain in the eye, along with blurred vision and vomiting. If not treated within hours of the onset of symptoms, it will often cause blindness. Another category is called secondary glaucoma. As the name implies, this type is triggered by such other conditions in the eye as tumors, cataracts, or eye injuries. A small group of people are afflicted by the fourth type, known as congenital glaucoma. This type is present at birth or shortly thereafter and is indicated if the infant has enlarged eyeballs and an increased sensitivity to light.

How It “Steals” Vision

Glaucoma could steal up to 90 percent of your vision in one eye without your being aware of it. How is that possible? All of us have a naturally occurring blind spot at the back of each eye. This spot on the retina, where your nerve fibers join together to form the optic nerve, is devoid of light-sensing cells. You are unaware of this blind spot, however, because your brain has the ability to “paint in” the missing bits of the picture. Ironically, it is the brain’s ability to do this that makes glaucoma so insidious.

Dr. Ivan Goldberg, a leading Australian ophthalmologist, told Awake!: “Glaucoma is called the sneak thief of sight because it doesn’t give you any symptoms. The most common kind of glaucoma is slow and steady and, without any warning, causes damage to the nerve structure that connects the eye to the brain. Whether your eyes water or they don’t, whether they are dry or not, whether they see clearly to read and write or they don’t has nothing to do with glaucoma. You can have perfectly comfortable eyes and have very bad glaucoma.”

Detecting the Thief

Unfortunately, there is no single comprehensive test for glaucoma. Using a device known as a tonometer, an eye specialist may start by checking the fluid pressure in your eyes. The instrument is used gently to flatten the cornea, or front part of your eye. The amount of force required to perform this task is measured, and in this way the pressure inside your eye can be gauged. The eye specialist may also look for signs of glaucoma by using instruments that identify damaged tissue in the nerve structure that connects the eye to the brain. Dr. Goldberg says: “We see if the nerve fibers or blood vessels at the back of the eye are unusual in shape, because that can be an indication that nerves are being damaged.”

Glaucoma is also detected by visual-field testing. Dr. Goldberg explains: “A person looks into a bowl of white light, and there is a brighter white light that is shone at a little spot inside that bowl. The person responds by pressing a button when he or she can see the little white light.” Failure to recognize the white light when it is at the outer edge of your visual field could indicate glaucoma. New instruments are being developed that might simplify this rather tedious procedure.

Who Is at Risk?

Paul is a healthy man in his early 40’s. He says: “I went to the optometrist to be tested for a new pair of glasses, and during the visit he asked me if I had a family history of glaucoma. I did some investigating and discovered that both an aunt and an uncle had this condition. I was referred to an eye specialist, who confirmed that I had glaucoma.” Dr. Goldberg explains: “If your mother or father has it, your risk of getting glaucoma goes up three to five times. And if you have a brother or a sister with glaucoma, then your risk of getting it goes up between five and seven times.”

Dr. Kevin Greenidge of the Glaucoma Foundation in the United States highlights other risk factors, saying: “If you are over 45 and of African descent, or if you have any of these risk factors—family history of glaucoma, nearsightedness, diabetes, a previous eye injury or regular use of cortisone/steroid products—get your eyes tested every year.” Even if you have no risk factors and are under 45, the foundation recommends that you still have your eyes checked for glaucoma every four years. If you are over 45, you should have this checkup every two years.

Your risk of developing glaucoma increases if:

You are of African descent
Someone in your family has glaucoma
You have diabetes
You are nearsighted
You are a regular, long-term user of cortisone/steroid—used in some medical creams and asthma sprays
You have a previous eye injury
You are over 45 years of age

Treat It and Beat It

The treatment for Paul’s glaucoma includes the use of special eye drops once a day. Paul says: “The drops I use inhibit the production of the aqueous fluid in the eyeball.” Paul also underwent a treatment in which a laser beam was used to “drill” about ten tiny holes in the front of his eyes near where the natural drain holes occur. He says: “When I had my first eye treated with the laser, I was quite tense and nervous, and this magnified the discomfort that I felt. However, when my second eye was treated a few days later, I knew what to expect. I was far more relaxed, and the doctor had virtually finished the operation before I realized it.” Treatment has helped stabilize the pressure in Paul’s eyes.

Paul’s outlook is thus positive. He says: “My retinas have only been slightly damaged, and thankfully, I still have my full peripheral vision. If I remember to use my eye drops each day, it is likely to stay that way.”

Women, even those who are not obsessed with beauty products and treatments, always want to find the perfect way to delay, if not stop, aging, which is a natural process that every human goes through.

Every day, we are bombarded by commercial pitches in print and on TV touting this or that product as the Holy Grail of those searching for the perfect potion to lessen wrinkles, fine lines, and the dreaded crow’s feet.

Sadly, aging is irreversible but the good news is that we can move into that phase of our lives with grace and dignity and hopefully, less wrinkles.

Olay, one of the top brands in the field, pitted the top selling Total Effects against six other similar creams in the market.

Procter & Gamble scientific communications manager David Khoo exposed the outcome of an investigative beauty study comparing the overall efficacy of seven popular anti-aging creams and their ingredients.

The “exposé” was unveiled in an event held at the Mandarin Oriental, Manila.

Olay Total Effects and other creams with Beech Extract, Idebenone, Retinol, Beta-Hydroxy Acid, Folic Acid and Vitamins C and E were included in the study, which used three key technical measurements to assess the creams’ effectiveness in restoring, enhancing, and protecting skin.

Scientists measured the rate of trans-epidermal water loss over a 30-day period. A product, which helps restore skin’s moisture barrier lipids, will demonstrate a decrease in a person’s TEWL and ensure skin moisture levels are maintained.

To evaluate whether a product enhances the skin’s appearance via exfoliation, the rate of surface cell turnover was measured. P&G explains that as women age, the rate of surface cell turnover slows down and this has a negative effect on skin tone, texture, and radiance. Fine lines and wrinkles also increase. Thus, it is important for an anti-aging cream to accelerate the rate of surface cell turnover in choosing a cream that promises younger-looking skin.

The study also measured the amount of lipid peroxides on the skin to assess whether a product protects skin from free radicals. Lipid peroxides are created when UV rays and free radicals attack the skin and this process has been linked to premature aging. Reducing the amount of LPO on the skin therefore becomes one way to keep skin young-looking.

The creams were ranked using the anti-aging Multi-Performance Index, a composite score designed by P&G scientists, based on benefits dermatologists deem important, that measures the effectiveness of a facial cream in restoring moisture, enhancing, exfoliation, and protecting the skin’s surface against damaging free radicals to revive its youthful beauty.

The study showed Olay Total Effects had the best composite score at restoring, enhancing, and protecting skin and keeping it younger-looking. The product’s unique VitaNiacin Complex provides all three benefits that dermatologists deem important to help fight the seven signs of skin aging with just one product.

“Cosmetic products designed to reduce the visible effects of skin aging should address multiple indicators of aging in a strong and balanced manner,” Khoo says.

The study’s conclusion was that other anti-aging products are good at providing just one or two benefits instead of all three.

For example, retinoids may deliver anti-wrinkle effects but they can also cause damage to the skin’s moisture barrier, resulting in redness and irritation.

According to an independent third party survey conducted at the 21st World Congress of Dermatology, 9 out of 10 dermatologists agreed that “an effective anti-aging treatment should restore skin health by strengthening the moisture barrier, enhance the appearance of skin, and protect skin’s surface from damaging free radicals.”

During the event, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rosario Abaya-Blas of St. Luke’s Medical Center says women should do their part to fight aging and not just rely on creams.

“There are many different ways of fighting the signs of aging. The primary way is through our lifestyle. For example, avoiding sun exposure during the hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and applying sunscreen. Another way is through topicals. For these to work effectively, they need to provide multiple benefits, as there are many clinical signs of aging, from dryness to wrinkles to dull skin,” she explains.

The launch also introduced the introduction of model-actress Angel Aquino as Olay’s new brand ambassador alongside her good friend Daphne Oseña-Paez.

“Daphne’s a good friend of mine and she’s always been telling me to try Olay because she really loves it. And you can see it’s done wonders to her skin!” says Aquino. “I switched and it’s true, it really does work!”

Aquino and Paez have even more reasons to look their best as they excitedly prepare for an upcoming reunion after 10 years with fellow F girl Cher Calvin at the upcoming Olay Swap in SM Megamall on Aug. 29.
